Myth or Fact?

Having a Cesarean birth means I am exempt from having pelvic floor issues.
❌ MYTH ❌
Sure, Cesarean delivery does not cause direct trauma to the pelvic floor like vaginal delivery does. BUT going through a *major abdominal surgery* does impact how our deep core functions. While our abdominal wall is healing from the incision, often the pelvic floor “picks up the slack”, and can lead to increased tension through these muscles.
Increased muscle tension can prevent muscles from functioning optimally. And when it comes to the pelvic floor, this can manifest in many different ways:
- incontinence💦,
- low back / hip / pelvic pain💥,
- constipation💩 and
- painful intercourse🚫.
The moral of the story? Get assessed by a pelvic health PT even after having a c-section!
