Why ellephysio?

Well, as the great Tom Jones sings in his song, Kiss. “Women and girls, rule my world.
Baby, rule my world!” And itʼs the truth!

I have been practicing physiotherapy since 2005 in the field of clinical Sports Medicine
and more recently Womenʼs Health, and Iʼve always had a affinity for treating women
and young girls. Especially when I started incorporating the Womenʼs Health side of
things into my Sport Medicine practice. You see, they are one and the same.

It all started with one of my patients. She was a physio herself, but unfortunately we
canʼt fix ourselves, so she came to me for some treatment. She was a self-made,
brilliant, Womenʼs Health PT, and a pretty cool chick. I had sent a pregnant friend of
mine her way when my treatments werenʼt getting the results I wanted, and asked to sit
in on their session together to glean what her treatment was all about. I understood
most of what was going on, but I could tell there was a bit of something more that I
wasnʼt familiar with. I felt like that robot in the movie, Short Circuit, saying “More input, need more input!”. My pregnant friend felt better in a couple of sessions, and that was all I needed to know that I had to learn what this physio was doing. What was the big secret?

When that physioʼs husband got offered a great career opportunity, that involved a
relocation across the country, she approached me. She told me that that she saw a skill
set in me that she thought would blend well with her Womenʼs Health approach. I was
pumped and eager to learn. We spent the next couple of months working together in
physio “jam sessions” and I sat in on several of her patient treatments, most of them
post-natal women. It was so exciting to learn a new concept, and I immediately saw a
huge overlap in how I could incorporate these new ideas into my own Sport Medicine
practice. I was the first orthopaedic physiotherapist that she had shared her concept
with.

I experimented with these new concepts with a few of my teenage girl clients that had
injuries ranging from unstable shoulders to severe shin splints. What I found, is that
teenage girls were very open to a concept that included the pelvic floor in their training,
AND it totally helped them get over their injuries faster and stronger than they were pre-injury! It was so exciting! Not just for me, but the girls felt a huge difference too!

I first started my independent practice as Kaizen Physiotherapy. Kaizen being the
Japanese phrase meaning, continuous improvement or change for the better. I loved
what it stood for and felt that it represented who I was as a physiotherapist, both in my
love for learning and in the way I treated my patients. However, there was one small
problem. Nobody else knew what Kaizen meant, and so the meaning was lost on most
people.

The metamorphosis into ellephysio began after entering a contest held by Kitestring
Creative Branding Studio, and coming in SECOND, ugh. Even though I wasnʼt the grand prize winner, I met with Jenn & Chris anyway, because I needed a website and wanted to hear what they were all about. I was greeted with coffee, gumdrops and jellybeans! Who could ask for anything more!?! Our first meeting went great. It didnʼt take me long to realize that I needed some help, and they were the perfect fit!

So over the past few months, after a really fun “discovery session” and a couple of
cupcakes, ellephysio was born. When the team at Kitestring first revealed my new name
and logo, I got all choked up and teary. They really understood me and what I was
about. Although Kaizen stood for all good things, ellephysio communicated what I did in one simple word.

And so here I am, a Sport Medicine AND Womenʼs Health physiotherapist, focusing on
changing the lives of women and teenage girls for the better. My goal is to make
females more confident within their own bodies. To make them feel strong and sure of
themselves. Whether that be tumbling across a cheerleading stage, doing high kicks in
dance, running quickly across a basketball court, participating confidently in a yoga
class or being able to run and jump with your children at play, painless and with dry
undies. Life is a sport, weʼre all athletes in our own way. Iʼm passionate about what I do
and Iʼd love to help you find the athlete with you.

Confidence from within.
