Pelvic Health Physiotherapy
What is Pelvic Health Physiotherapy?
Pelvic Health Physiotherapy is a niche specialty of physiotherapy that requires post-graduate education and rostering with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario to practice. Your physiotherapist will ask detailed questions related to your pelvic health as well as conduct a comprehensive physical examination to help get to the root of your complaint or concern. Together, with your physiotherapist, you will create a plan to reach your goals.
Pelvic Health Physiotherapy can treat a variety of presentations and conditions, including but not limited to:
- Urinary or fecal incontinence, frequency or urgency
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Pelvic pain – coccyx (tailbone), pubic bone, hips
- Pain or discomfort with intercourse
- Menstrual pain or discomfort, including difficulty inserting a tampon
- Constipation, IBS or other gastro-intestinal disorders
- Pregnancy related discomfort
- Prenatal preparation for delivery, including perineal massage/stretching
- Postnatal assessment and rehabilitation
- Cesearean Scar
- Post Prostatectomy related concerns
- Erectile dysfunction
- Peyronie’s Disease
- Post Pelvic or Abdominal surgery assessment and rehabilitation (eg. Hysterectomy)
- Peri and post-menopausal symptoms
- Hip, knee and low back symptoms
Pelvic Health assessment and treatment most often includes an internal vaginal and/or rectal assessment, however this is not always absolutely necessary. You will discuss with your physiotherapist what kind of assessment and treatment would be best suited for your needs and what you feel most comfortable with.
